Quality of Life
High standard of living is often tied to an area's natural setting, and Laguna Beach is no exception. Residents here enjoy a comfortably secluded ocean setting, and a pleasant sub-tropical year-round climate, making quality of life that much easier to maintain. The wave breaks at Laguna Beach provide one of the best surf spots on the Southern California Coast, although cliffs surrounding the beach keep it from becoming overcrowded, and allow room for sand sports like beach volleyball and castle building. Canyons extending inland from the beach afford miles of shaded and serene hiking trails. Laguna Beach is also home to one of California's largest urban greenbelts, which has been growing with the help of citizens since the 1960s, and came close to being named a national park in 1980. Today, Laguna Beach's backdrop of natural ridgelines and scenic hills is largely a result of the greenbelt and the local non-profit corporation maintaining it.
Beyond its natural setting, quality of life in Laguna Beach has a lot to do with the area's history. The city was originally founded as an artists' colony and still maintains a thriving culture befitting a much larger, modern city. But this town isn't full of starving artists - average incomes in Laguna Beach are much higher than the state average, and unemployment is often at just a few percentage points.
